Sick...

I'm not sure if you've ever had a child with a fever of 105.5, but let me tell you: it's scary. That's the fever Owen woke up with last Friday night. So, I called the 24 hour on-call nurse and she helped us get his fever down to 103, which she said would be sufficient in allowing us to wait until morning to get him to see a doctor. Needless to say, we didn't sleep much that night. The next morning, I loaded up my sick little guy and headed to the doctor. While there, he actually fell asleep in my arms while the doctor was examining him. Maybe that's because the lowest his fever ever got that day was 103, and that was with the maximum dose of Tylenol and Ibuprofen. At any rate, they did a strep test and a flu test and it turns out he had the flu. I've only ever known of the stomach flu, so it surprised me that my burning up, croup coughing, lethargic little boy had the flu. But he did. So I specifically asked the doctor to send his prescriptions to a pharmacy that had a drive through so I didn't have to haul the poor little guy into a store. We get to said pharmacy and it turns out the medicine he needs for the croup is out of stock. So, they send us over to the Shopko pharmacy, which is not a drive through. By this time it's well into the afternoon and Owen has been filled with a bunch of medicine, a bit of Gatorade and no rest. But, I can't leave him in the car, so I take him in with me. We pick up the medication, which the pharmacist tells me might not be the easiest for Owen to take, and I reassure him that Owen's tough and he can handle it. We get back to the car, I decide to give Owen the medicine right there in the parking lot and he immediately throws it up. Pharmacist was right. I have no change of clothes, only a few wipes, so I proceed to wipe the puke off my poor little guy, and lug him back in to the pharmacy in his throw-up soaked jammies to ask the pharmacist what the next best option might be because that one didn't work out so well for us. The kind pharmacist, bless his heart, quickly takes back the liquid form of the medication he had just given us and is in the process of preparing the pill form when poor little Owen proceeds to vomit all over the Shopko pharmacy floor. He's sitting in a shopping cart, which I quickly move only for him to throw up 2 more times leaving vomit over the ENTIRE floor. My poor boy is crying at this point, I have not a single wipe on me nor anything else to clean up with mess with, so what do I do? I cry. I seriously froze and all I could do was cry. Can you picture it? Thankfully, the employees of the pharmacy were incredibly kind about it, handed us some towels and reassured us it was ok and that they would clean up with mess. There was even a really sweet lady who apparently had seen what had happened and had her daughter grab us a package of wipes, which they paid for. So, although we were in pretty sad shape, God provided several people that day whose kindness was appreciated beyond what I can express. Anyhow, we eventually did get home, Owen didn't move for about 4 days, but he did get better. And now, excluding a few deep coughs here and there, our little guy is back to his normal self. So there you have our adventure in the land of sick.

I think I see R2 in there! And it looks like the Shopko prescription bottle is holding a lightsaber. I couldn't help but notice....

Oh Jen, I am so sorry. It makes me wanna cry reading about the two of you in tears. I love hearing how God provides strangers so support us when we need it most. Glad to hear everyone's doing better!

poor little guy and poor Mama. Totally been there too, 105 fevers are really scary. Brady had them when he was little. Hope you get back to your routine soon and you both get some needed sleep.
