Owen and his birds

In Owen's bedroom, we have a set of bird counting cards framed on the wall and there is a bird mobile hanging above his crib. Up until the past few weeks, I don't think he ever really noticed the birds (he probably quit looking at the mobile after about the second one I made...they rotate quite frequently). Anyhow, the birds have recently become the highlight of any sleeping/rocking to sleep event. Every time he goes down for a nap or at night, we have to sit in the rocking chair for at least 10 minutes just pointing to all of the birds and saying over and over "one robin, two cardinals, three mourning doves, four phoebes, etc." He likes to point at each of them as we go through them, so if I stop using my hand to point too, he will push my hand towards the birds to keep me going. Point is, he loves his birds. In fact, the other day he was looking out the window and saw some birds pecking at seeds in the grass outside...he then looked towards his birds on the wall, then looked back out the window, and then back at the wall...he apparently had figured out that what he was seeing outside was the same as the drawings on his wall! It's so fun to see him figure life out. Oh yeah, and today we were outside for a long time planting more bushes and Owen decided that he wanted to CRAWL, not scoot, through the grass. This is a breakthrough for him, although he still scoots all over while inside. We'll see....but he's decided crawling isn't so bad after all (at least not in the grass). The pics above are him peeking out of his crib, and the ones below are of the birds....obviously.

Houston, we have a problem!

LEGO MAN IS MISSING!!!!  Why do the favorite things always disappear first?  A few weeks ago we somehow lost Owen's favorite book "SkippyJohn Jones, Up and Down"....and now Lego Man is nowhere to be found.  I'm sure there will be many more mysterious disappearances to come...

Welcome Home Brian!

Uncle Brian, C.J.'s younger brother, is officially back! And we are happy to have him. After a few years in the NFL and a 6 month mission trip, Brian has moved back to the valley. He came over for dinner tonight, and we decided he needed to make his debut on the blog.
Brian, welcome back!
P.S. I wonder which side of the family Owen resembles...

Nobody would ever guess they're brothers:

We are in the process of putting in some grapes in our back yard.
Daddy is showing them to Owen:

Lego Man

For some reason, Owen has really taken to putting any little toy that has a head in his mouth to just hang out.  He used to favor this little chicken that came with a farm set he has, but lately he has LOVED Lego Man.  He never puts him in feet first...always head first.  And then he just plays like that; scooting around the house in search of things to do with Lego Man's feet sticking out of his mouth.  Hmmm...

Pretty much the sweetest kid ever!

Our nephew, Grant, came over with Grama and Grandpa St. Hilaire the other day to babysit Owen while C.J. and I went out on a date.  Every time I see Grant, I am so impressed with the sweet little gentleman he is....and, he is also VERY good with Owen.  You can tell he's had a lot of practice being a big brother.  Anyhow, it was really nice to enjoy time alone with my husband and see Grama, Grandpa, and Grant all in one day.  Thanks guys!

This is his version of a silly face.

Picnic...

Yesterday Allison and company came out and we went to Fort Simcoe for a picnic. It was stinking cold, but we had fun just the same. Here are a few shots of the older boys...Jack was sound asleep for the whole thing.

Owen bundled up.

Oliver

It's a bit blurry, but I had to share the joy this captures.

The Girls

A couple days ago the girls, MY girls, came over for dinner with their family. Boy oh boy do I miss them!  Now that they are all in school, our opportunities to see each other are pretty hard to come by: they have school, and swim team, and Girls Scouts, etc. and I have a baby who goes to bed at 6:00.  So the times that I do actually get to see them I completely cherish.  It's hard to go from seeing people you love every day all day (ok, besides weekends) to seeing them only a few times a month.  But the girls are growing so quickly and definitely turning in to wonderful little people.  So here's a little update on them:  Allison is in second grade now and is quite the little reader/writer.  I read one of the stories she had written last time I was at their house and I'm pretty sure I couldn't even write a story that well at age 26.  Evie and Rosie are in a bilingual kindergarten class and already know more Spanish than I learned in my three years of it in high school.  Evie just participated in her first swim meet last weekend and won her heat in her first race ever!  She also lost a tooth while she was here, which I think makes 4 now. Rosie is quite the little artist these days.  She is only 6 but she can sew pretty stinking well.  She has also lost 4 teeth and told me that SHE still believes in the tooth fairy (Evie tried very hard to convince us all that the tooth fairy is actually Mommy.)  Anyhow, I just needed to say that it was so refreshing to get to see the girls the other day and I can't believe how quickly they grow up.  It honestly (and I'm not just saying this) seems like just the other day they were all sitting in their high chairs covered in "boppies" and baby food!  There will always be a VERY special place for these 3 precious little girls in my heart!

the cowboy in me...

C.J. and I often talk about how we dream to some day have a big pasture with horses.  I think that might be because there is a little part of us that secretly wishes we were cowboys.   If we actually did get horses, they'd be in tough shape because neither of us have ANY idea how to take care of them, or even how to ride them for that matter.  We both grew up in the country and are definitely used to wide open spaces, the sound of birds and tractors, and the smell of cows in the distance.  I LOVE blaring the country music wile driving down Fort Rd. (although lately that has been replaced by "Wee Sing Silly Songs").  We try to go to rodeos every summer to watch the bull riding and love it when we do.  But to say that we are cowboys is definitely stretching it....farm kids maybe, but cowboys, definitely not.  However, I sometimes like to play the part...and that has recently been manifesting itself in Owen's life more so than ours.  For example, his big boy bedding has cowboys and teepees on it.  I have purchased several articles of clothing for Owen that are either overalls of some sort or have a picture of a cowboy on them.  For Christmas, we got Owen a rocking horse that actually  neighs and wiggles it's tail.  All that being said, I sometimes live out my secret desire for us to all be rugged cowboys through Owen....and here are some pictures to prove it.  He would make a pretty cute little cowboy, though!

Owen's Tricks

In the last couple months, Owen has really started to blossom and is learning all sorts of new things.  It is so fun to watch him figure life out and express himself.  This video (taken early one morning just like most of our other clips of him because early mornings and late evenings are his most animated times) pretty much showcases his favorite things to do right now. It's not necessarily the best clip of any one trick, but it has a little taste of them all so you'll get the idea.  The first trick: scoot.  Our boy doesn't crawl, he scoots.  He can get anywhere he wants now, it's just a kind of unique way of doing so. His second trick: saying "bye bye."  And third: clapping his hands.  He really likes to clap to songs, particularly "Clap Your Hands All You People."  C.J. is oh-so-thrilled that I am posting a little bit of his singing voice, so just try to focus on Owen and not the background noises. If you ask me, I happen to think he has a nice voice and absolutely love hearing him play with Owen so to me this video is priceless.  Sorry about the glare and poor quality...this was filmed with a whole bunch of sun in the background.  Enjoy!

The Garden

Today was yard work day.  We planted some laurel bushes, a boxwood, and the vegetable garden.  Daddy was in the front digging holes, while Mama and Owen were in the back yard: Mama planting vegetables and Owen enjoying his first time playing in his sand box (sand turtle actually...thanks Alli).  After a few minutes of some babbling, followed by silence, followed by some complaining grunts, I came around the corner to check on Owen.....only to find him face down in the dirt.  Apparently he had fallen out of the sand box directly on his face, which had just been lathered with sunscreen.  Hope you enjoy the pics as much as we did!

"Mom, stop taking pictures and wipe this stuff off of me!"

This is how I found him:

A Day in the Life of Owen...

Daddy heard some fussing in the play room and this is what he came upon:
(the red wire thing is a shopping cart tipped on its side)

Telling Daddy something very exciting.

His very favorite thing to do right now: chew on the super cheap plastic grocery items while perched on his look-out step.

Mama put a few too many bubbles in the bath...but baby loved them!

"Dan's Day Care: We're Full Up."

Owen snacking on a graham cracker (one of his favorites!)

Holland coloring on the sidewalk.

Grandpa pushing Oliver.  He must have pushed him for at least half an hour.

Holland loving the swing.

So my sister Allison had another beautiful baby boy last week.  While she and her husband were busy pushing baby out at the hospital, my Mom, Dad, and I were in charge of taking care of the other 3 grandkids.  You would think that 3 adults ought to easily handle 2 toddlers and a baby.  In all honesty, we were completely pooped by the end of the week!  It was quite a lot of work and a bit chaotic at times, but we had a ton of fun and I'm pretty sure the kids thoroughly enjoyed playing together.  Oh yeah, and about the title.  Every time the phone rang, my dad answered it "Dan's Day Care:  We're full up!"  Above are some pics from Jack's birth week.

Better late than never...

I'm really not the most computer savvy person on the planet.  Maybe that's why it has taken me, oh, like 6 months to figure out how to do this.  But I'm having a go at it once again.  So here is a pic of our fam:  or I guess now it's above?!?! Wow, I have a lot of figuring out to do here.
